Team: Exosome Engineering

Reports: Currently 7 and expanding team to around 10-12 people       

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB                                                                                                                         

As the Director of the Exosome Engineering team you will be a pivotal member of the Research leadership team at Evox. You will play a key role in supporting the development and the delivery of the Research strategy, leading the Exosome Engineering team, and playing an important direct role in the development and delivery of the exosome engineering strategy. The Exosome Engineering team is responsible for developing platforms for loading of various proteins and mRNA into/onto exosomes as well as potentially other endogenously-loaded drug cargos, whilst driving the engagement and development of your team members. The Exosome Engineering group is at the heart of how we manipulate cells to produce exosomes that are naturally loaded with our desired drug cargo (endogenous drug loading). This Director will be responsible for devising ways to effectively load and deliver a variety of different protein and mRNA payloads as well as potentially other drug modalities. Another group within the Research is focused on exogenous loading of drug cargos – typically small RNA drugs.

This position is based at Evox Therapeutics facility at the Oxford Science Park, Oxford, UK and will report to the VP Research.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership within Exosome Engineering team and inputting to the wider Research strategy to support the growth and development of the Business
  • Provide strategic design advice to projects on how best to engineer drugs or targeting ligands into or onto exosomes using or modifying existing engineering approaches
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team, identify and explore new endogenous exosome engineering strategies to enable loading of different drug cargos and attachment of targeting ligands in order to expand the variety and types of drugs and ligands that can be engineered into or onto the surface of exosomes
  • Set clear priorities tied to the development of the exosome engineering toolbox and its application within projects, working in close collaboration with other business areas as required
  • Responsible for the overall resource planning and allocation of people to projects from the Exosome Engineering Team section to ensure delivery of corporate goals
  • Work collaboratively across the internal R&D organisation including Research, Process Development and Translational Pharmacology to ensure goal alignment and execution of priorities
  • Support and oversee any third-party partnership or collaborations connected to exosome targeting, working closely with senior stakeholders to ensure the delivery of objectives and cultivating strong working relationships with external parties
  • Supporting the strategic decisions in consultation with the VP Research and other key senior leaders to advance Research platform and pipeline projects
  • Role models the Company values and leadership behaviours, cultivating high performing and highly engaged teams
  • As part of the leadership team will be responsible for developing the skills and expertise within the Exosome Engineering team whilst embedding and creating a culture which nurtures talent, thrives on innovation and empowers people to grow and perform at work
  • Build strong working relationships with enabling functions, including Finance, IP, Legal, Business Development and HR to ensure the optimal environment for delivery within the Exosome Engineering Team
  • Presents regularly to the internal senior leadership team and provides timely provision of data and documentation reports to support intellectual property filings and regulatory submissions

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Education and Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biology or related field with at least 10 years post-PhD experience.
  • Candidates must be highly experienced in exosome biology, or in a closely related field.
  • Proven ability to oversee and manage a team of scientists and deliver tangible results
  • Industry experience desirable but not essential for outstanding candidates.
  • Molecular biology experience required.

Experience & knowledge

  • Proven leadership experience with in-depth knowledge of exosome biology, or experience in a closely related field.
  • Good understanding of cellular secretion and uptake pathways as relevant to exosomes.
  • Familiarity with approaches to screening compounds and assessing drug delivery.
  • Experience designing and developing protein and mRNA therapeutics.
  • Proven leader, who has experience of operational and strategic leadership & development of teams
  • Will have an entrepreneurial attitude and able to work in a fast paced and agile environment, self-motivated with a high level of attention to detail
  • Proven communication & interpersonal skills with experience managing and presenting complex scientific data
  • Excellent general problem solving and project management skills, with a proven ability to oversee operational aspects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong collaborative and team-oriented mindset
